well i am no expert but i think it is to do with the support it gives your body (neck and back)
a firm foam mattress is the most comfy and supportive, it moulds to your body
springy or super soft mattresses are uncomfortable and can cause back pain
i suppose it just makes you more comfy and less prone to aches and pains therefore a better nights sleep

you spend on the mattress 1/3 of your life being adult, so depends on the mattress specs your sleeping experience may be different

there are mattresses which "remembers" your sleeping pose and which ultrasoft, after trying such thing, I doubt you'll want to sleep on something else!
