Hey all, I have been in a reading rut lately and would love to have some suggestions for new books to read. I read mainly contemporary/romance, but I am open to other things. I do struggle a bit in my reading and have found a lot of classic books or the types they hand out in school difficult to read, still I am open to suggestions. Also, feel free just to state what books you guys have been reading and like or dislike.
I love discussing books with people, but none of my friends read.

Re: Books
I recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hossieni, it's my favorite book
There's a mix of genres in there, you've got your romance, history and tragic parts. I ended the book with tears in my eyes and wanting to tell everyone I loved that I loved them haha, it had a huge affect on me. I also recommend The Kite Runner, by the same author, but advise you read this later.
A book I wasn't too fond of was A Virgin Suicides, it was hyped up by BooksAndQuills, but it disappointed me. The story seemed too dull and slow, not what I expected.

Re: Books
I may have to check that one out, the Kite Runner was assigned in high school and I had difficulty reading it, but I may try A Thousand Splendid Suns. After all It may have just been because it was an assigned book, so I hated it on principal, lol.
I watched the Virgin Suicides movie and really didn't care for it, can't imagine I would care much for the book either.
Thanks for the suggestion. I just finished Consequences by Aleatha Romig. It was a very difficult read, emotionally. it was a little boring in the middle of the book, but the ending has me wanting to read the second part. This book is not for the faint of heart.

Re: Books
If I Stay by Gayle Forman or Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn.
If I stay is good if you want to cry and Gone Girl is somewhat of a mystery. I loved them both.
I also tried to read the Virgin Suicides. I really liked the movie and the book was pretty similar to it but I just couldn't get through it. And reading something really depressing vs watching something really depressing makes me more emotional.

Re: Books
I have been wanting to check out some of the John Green books. I don't hate YA, it's just not the majority of what I read, I like when the people I'm reading about are around my age (24). If it's a good story though I'll read it, I'm just really not into all of these Twilghty type books that seem to be overtaking the YA genre.

Re: Books
I enjoy John Green books, Will Grayson Will Grayson was hilarious!
TFIOS was good too, I can't wait for the movie.
I don't enjoy twilighty books either. Or vampire related books, they're all the same thing! Some girl falling in love with a vampire who looks irresistible and then some sort of fight later taking place. All the variations of the same concept has been overdone

Re: Books
The thing about John is that he writes in such a beautiful way. The stories are a bit "same-y" (especially LfA and PT), but he just has this way of writing that is so good. TFIOS is very good on all levels, and I know "proper" adults (I'm 20) who have enjoyed it just as much as I did.

Re: Books
Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse is my absolute favourite novel of all time and it always helps me through rough times.
In brief summary, it's a story about transcending pain.

Re: Books
I just read The World's Wife by Carol Ann Duffy - it's poetry from the pov of wifes and sisters of famous literary characters or myths (and elvis). I was a little hesitant because I'm an English major and the only poetry I usually encounter is very hard to grasp, but these are easy and fun.
I second John Green, I loved Looking for Alaska, didn't really think much of an Abundance of Katherines.
My favourite novel is The Strange Incident With the Dog in the Night-Time, but maybe that's just because it has such emotional value to me.
