Re: Casey Neistat
I know, right? I thought the exact same thing. Granted, the whole teen father phase happened 20 years ago and, maybe, his father was a jerk back then and has since mellowed out. But when I think back to all the times his dad has been on the vlog he is exactly as you mentioned and I just can't envision him being the kind of guy who would take the "you made your bed now lie in it" kind of approach with his son and grandson.jennafear557 wrote: His parents or family didn't let him and owen live with them? It's weird bc all his vlogs with his dad show him as a caring, smiling, generous guy, so why was he out in a trailer park?
I'd have to wonder if, back then, Casey was an insufferable, possibly angry, know-it-all whom made his life more difficult because of his attitude and, in his stories of the past, he fails to mention all the things he did to make things harder on himself.

Re: Casey Neistat
I feel like that's the truth. Casey was probably a mess then and took it upon himself to go live in a trailer park after messing up relationships with his family or just deciding to make it on his own. No fault in that, but it seems like he's glossed over a few important details of his rags to riches story. I generally like him and think he's really talented, but as time has gone on, his arrogance is really showing (even if it's hiding behind his gracious thank yous).Presence wrote: I'd have to wonder if, back then, Casey was an insufferable, possibly angry, know-it-all whom made his life more difficult because of his attitude and, in his stories of the past, he fails to mention all the things he did to make things harder on himself.

Re: Casey Neistat
Glad I'm not the only one calling Casey out for him bullshit. I noticed a lot more of his fans getting fed up too especially around the time he originally ended the vlog (I haven't really watched since then though). Casey is a master manipulator and liar, he's also very smart, calculated, has a large ego and is selfish (notice how even though he's gives all this advice it's all vague and sounds like what you'd read in a blue print- not actually solid advice someone could act upon?). Even his generous acts are merely done to benefit him in the end. I often find him ver hypocritical in what he says and how he acts. He's quite simply...a rich douche. I already mentioned how his life misfortunes all fell on his own poor decisions and that without them he'd still probably be some upper middle class successful guy. I definitely feel he's embellished his life story and everyone is just too scared to expose him bc he's the cash cowjennafear557 wrote:I feel like that's the truth. Re: Casey Neistat
he is from a background in advertising, so he is well groomed in those skills....add to the fact that most of his work in advertising also included a hefty dose of his narcissism which just adds to the manipulation to make him seem more grandiose than he is. .Lolokwow wrote:Casey is a master manipulator and liar, he's also very smart, calculated, has a large ego and is selfish (notice how even though he's gives all this advice it's all vague and sounds like what you'd read in a blue print- not actually solid advice someone could act upon?).
Re: Casey Neistat
this has always sort of confused me about his past in advertising. if you go wayyyy back on his channel, he has some videos of ads he's done for various big companies, and they're all centered around him. when he was advertising, before he began daily vlogging, nobody gave a shit about him (aside from his failed hbo show i guess??). so why would any company hire him to make a casey-centric ad for them? wouldn't it be way more effective for them to hire someone to make a more normal ad than to have some nobody making an erratic ad that's all about himself?luvey wrote:he is from a background in advertising, so he is well groomed in those skills....add to the fact that most of his work in advertising also included a hefty dose of his narcissism which just adds to the manipulation to make him seem more grandiose than he is. .Lolokwow wrote:Casey is a master manipulator and liar, he's also very smart, calculated, has a large ego and is selfish (notice how even though he's gives all this advice it's all vague and sounds like what you'd read in a blue print- not actually solid advice someone could act upon?).

I find it very obnoxious when rich people joke about missing flights or being really late for them. It seems to be a common trait amongst YouTubers and especially Casey. They actually don't realise how much it pisses off airline staff and other passengers. But it's alright though because they can just buy a full-price business ticket for the next flight because their 'job' is so easy and they don't have important deadlines to meet.

Re: Casey Neistat
Hey, so about your question, I think there are a few possibilities:tctp wrote:

1) Back when he wasn't a big vlogger and his name was still kind of niche, big companies probably paid him to do more than just make a video that you see posted to his YouTube channel (and theirs). So it's possible he made other videos for the client to use on social media, TV, whatever (less of him as a focus, so similar footage just edited with less of him, or none of him). We wouldn't see those because they're property of the client, not Casey. Companies may have also paid him for consulting. So working with him on a marketing strategy, conceptualizing or directing a video or entire ad campaign, etc. Making a fun video for his channel was just icing on the cake, you know?
2) It's possible clients just liked his style and that it wasn't like a traditional ad, so they were using part of their budget to try something new, see how it resonates with buyers, and then go from there. His ads seemed to have done well. He has connections in Hollywood and film/ad industry so while he wasn't super popular on YouTube, his name was known in his niche so he could get work.
3) As his popularity has grown, companies see the pull he has on YouTube and are happy to work with him these days.
Just my thoughts

Re: Casey Neistat
To add to jennafear557's theories:
How many times has Casey bragged about getting some huge budget for an ad and, instead of spending it on creating the ad, he went traveling instead? Twice? Three times?
I suspect he'd go into a pitch meeting and tell a company about some big concept he came up with and sold them on the idea. And, instead of doing it, he'd blow the money and then come up with some other concept that didn't cost as much. And thanks to his talent (and, most likely, the ideas of other people--like his brother) he'd deliver something that wasn't promised, but something innovative enough that they liked it.

Re: Casey Neistat
I don't really know that much about Casey, I watch his vlogs occasionally, but I just don't get how he made all his money, how he got so rich.
Is Candice's family a big deal in South Africa? I know they moved to Texas a long time ago, but idk... I read here that she has her own company. Is her business doing that well...?
She always seems so annoyed with everything and everyone.
I find them both very odd.
Casey is just such a self-obsessed and rude jerk. And that attitude is considered "cool" by the youth these days... oh boy. lol.

Re: Him being rich: From what I can tell, he was doing alright financially before he started doing daily vlogs. Just before he started vlogging, he got funding for his company, Beme. I'd guess he pocketed some of that money. Then, within less than a year, his YT channel exploded. His handful of viral videos have gotten millions upon millions of views. I would guess his income dramatically increased over the past two years or so thanks to Beme, the sale of Beme, his YT income, and the paid sponsorships he does on his channel.truth fairy wrote:I don't really know that much about Casey, I watch his vlogs occasionally, but I just don't get how he made all his money, how he got so rich.

Re: Candice's family: I'm not sure if her family is a big deal in South Africa, but it seems like they have a long history there. I remember, in one of Casey's video shot while in SA, Candice pointed out either a building or set of buildings and mentioned her grandfather built them. I'm guessing the family has had some degree of affluence.
Re: Her business: That's a good question. The business is still running and she has employees so someone must be buying her jewelry. Without Casey mentioning her companies, I would have never heard of them. I've checked out the Web site. There's nothing particularly special about what she sells. Honestly, I can't fathom how she keeps her business running.
Yeah, they are both a bit odd. I'd say Casey is arrogant and smug. And Candice, to me, is insufferable.

Re: Casey Neistat
RE Candice's Business: in a vlog they showed her line being sold in Barneys I believe it was, building on the previous theory I suspect a large chuck of the revenue comes from just shoppers in barneys that see a piece and possibly buy it as a gift or a "less flashy" piece than say from a designer line. While the pieces aren't extravagant they definitely have a niche market for hipsters/minimalists with a larger disposable incomePresence wrote:Re: Him being rich: From what I can tell, he was doing alright financially before he started doing daily vlogs. Re: Casey Neistat
Behind the Brand w/Bryan Elliott did a really great interview w/Candice, gives you insight into who she is and more about her story and family:

One thing that stuck out was that she was never a jewelry designer and then kind of took over her friend's business when her friend wanted out? Seems like maybe there was a falling out and Candice bought her out? Doesn't seem amicable at all. I really like her Billy! tshirt and tag necklaces!

I wouldnt be surprised if he was actually doing some shady stuff to put money in his own pocket instead of paying taxes or whatever...Presence wrote: From what I can tell, he was doing alright financially before he started doing daily vlogs. Good find, jennafear557! Thanks for posting the link.
I never would have thought I'd sit through a 30-minute interview with Candice. The interviewer sucked, but I came away from it having a bit more respect for Candice.

Re: Casey Neistat
Damn that interview made me like her a bit more, granted I'm still only 15 mins in and I have another 15 mins to go. I like that the interviewer is not making it about her being Casey Neistat's wife and that she's her own person.
Re: Casey Neistat
I generally like a lot of Casey's past videos, however the vlogs are feeling tired these days. Anyone else getting this impression? They're practically made from a cookie-cutter template now - timelapse, boosted board, vague talk about inspiration, fly somewhere, pretend to be surprised about something you're not really surprised about, repeat. It all used to seem more honest. He's kind of just playing a character in front of the camera - especially now that the sponsorship / corporate element seems so blatant in a lot of his videos.

For someone who claims to love New York City, he sure does spend quite a bit of time outside of it (i.e. vacations).

Re: Casey Neistat
Props to Casey for helping raise $2.5 million to help provide for poor people in Africa but why couldn't he have gone over there and actually helped film the people helped give them water, etc. like his friend Jerome did? Seems a little arrogant to me, like "I'll get a campaign started to raise money for poor people in Africa so I look good, but that's enough for people to think I am a good person, no need for me to do anything further".
