Skin Care by Hyram
Re: Skin Care by Hyram
I personally find Hyram annoying, but his followers are just as bad if not worse.

Definitely prefer James Welch's thoughts where fragrance is not the end all be all to whether a skin care product is good. Like you said, if it irritates your skin avoid it. If not, focus on the other ingredients.Guest wrote: βSat Sep 05, 2020 1:36 amI don't get the fragrance thing. If you're not sensitive to it then who cares. Neutrogena has good stuff lol.

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
i started binging on his videos yesterday and although i do find find them to be informative from a non dermatologist point of view, pretty weird he calls himself a specialist though, there was a point during watching his vids i was worried about not using the right skincare (i use simple and recently order alya skincare to experiment a bit which was expensive!) i spent about and hour looking at korean skincare as he recommended and was considering buying some despite already spending almost 100 bucks on skincare already, i had to stop myself
i would say for a brief i had fallen victim to his videos
he makes the whole skincare thing sound like we're not doing enough for the skin and that can be overwhelming
first he says "keep the skincare close to minimum" while recomending all these products to use at once becuase they have certain things
on top of that he says he doesn't trust sites that dont show the products ingredients while he recommends a korean skincare site that doesn't show the ingredients anywhere
i was doing some thinking and thought that since he has a big following he has got to be a subject on guru gossip and funny enough he was
and reading everything here has opened my eyes on him

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
i cannot believe he just hit 4 mil. his videos are so repetitive and he speaks like it's the only "truth" about that brand. he is not a formulator and has no qualifications. in his opinion if a product has fragrance it is bad so why does he make videos about lines with fragrance in every product, obviously we know his thoughts so what is the point of the video. there is no substance. also Susan Yara just did a video about why not to go strictly off ingredient labels without knowing the percentage of each ingredient and how they work together. I thought that was interesting because she really supported him, promoted, and collaborated with him in the past and that video seemed like a direct call out lol.

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
I think it was a coincidence about Susan Yara. Liah Yoo and James Welsh also posted videos on literally the exact same topic on the same day too. At first I thought that it was either a collaboration with all their channels or maybe I had missed a scandal that made this a hot topic. I think people are getting tired of these annoying channels who don't know anything about chemistry and product formulation just writing things off because of the ingredients list. Dr. Dray is also majorly guilty of this. She may be a dermatologist, but that just means she knows about skin biology. While she knows about which ingredients may be beneficial or detrimental to the skin, she's not a chemist and she has no idea how product formulation may enhance or diminish an ingredient's role in a formula. She also doesn't really understand how a lot of ingredients might interact with each other and why one thing that sounds "bad" may be included in a product, while a chemist might understand that the "bad" ingredient will actually help a beneficial ingredient and might be added in a way that it won't harm skin. This is why literally no chemist shares her passion on fragrance being the root of all evil. I believe on Instagram, she was even on a panel with a couple of chemists and she was the odd one out.kmk23 wrote: βWed Nov 25, 2020 1:14 pmi cannot believe he just hit 4 mil. his videos are so repetitive and he speaks like it's the only "truth" about that brand. he is not a formulator and has no qualifications. in his opinion if a product has fragrance it is bad so why does he make videos about lines with fragrance in every product, obviously we know his thoughts so what is the point of the video. there is no substance. also Susan Yara just did a video about why not to go strictly off ingredient labels without knowing the percentage of each ingredient and how they work together. Of course, since Hyram basically just plagiarizes all of Dr. Dray's videos, all of this will apply to his content too LOL. He might have to change his "ingredients don't lie, bitch" motto soon.

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
I just started watching him and I find that a lot of his content is inconsequential. I don't have an issue with YTbers who aren't chemists or have a background in dermatology, but I do find that he makes a lot of sweeping, albeit hypocritical generalizations about skincare products.kmk23 wrote: βWed Nov 25, 2020 1:14 pmi cannot believe he just hit 4 mil. his videos are so repetitive and he speaks like it's the only "truth" about that brand. he is not a formulator and has no qualifications. in his opinion if a product has fragrance it is bad so why does he make videos about lines with fragrance in every product, obviously we know his thoughts so what is the point of the video. there is no substance. also Susan Yara just did a video about why not to go strictly off ingredient labels without knowing the percentage of each ingredient and how they work together. As someone who has eczema/dermatitis, I'm limited to what products I can use. Although avoiding fragranced products is crucial for anyone who has sensitive skin, there are other factors such as diet/allergens/ stress levels, etc. You don't need to spend a "fortune" on good skincare. It perturbed me when he was acting snobbish about avoiding "drugstore" skincare with the bullshit excuse that he couldn't test the product/ receive samples. Even if you had accessed to samples, you're unlikely to see results overnight. The products that I use are all under 30 dollars with the exception of one lol

I honestly can't stand this dude. He is ok with using only certain products with fragrance and some of the products he recommends are trash. He seems to do this for the clout and fame, not because he's an actual skincare expert.

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
I just saw the thumbnail for his skincare line and literally burst out laughing. Standing around a bunch of tropical leaves like he just emerged from the forest, while wearing a collared shirt no less, might be the cringiest thing I've seen in a while. Like, we get it. You live in Hawaii. Blah blah blah.

Never really liked the kid. Does anyone know what qualifies him as a skincare expert?

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
He rubbed me the wrong way by calling himself an expert then, when asked if he'll be majoring in a relevant field, said no and began insulting professionals and students for not knowing as many ingredients as him. Worse, he explained in a different video that he basically just reads the Paula's Choice website. Good site, but it's consumer-oriented and no replacement for real training. (These videos were a year or two ago, but it sounds like his credentials and gall are unchanged.)
Then recently my husband needed a decent sunscreen, so I went back for his no-whitecast video. He even had a black roommate, so I didn't mind trusting his opinion on that at all.
Later one day, I ask my husband why he looks so pale. He says it's the sunscreen I bought!
Dang it, Hyram, you had one job!

Re: Skin Care by Hyram
Exactly this. Before I learned more about skincare and Hyram's background I thought fragrance was an evilish ingredient that had to be avoided at all costs, when board certified dermatologists like Dr Shereene or Dr Dray recommend products with fragrance in it. The internet acted like Hyram was the skincare jesus when he has no formal education on skincare and the way he presented himself was super misleading. He called himself specialist, a very vague term, and even though he said he wasn't a dermatologist or an esthetician he made it seem like a specialist was some form of educated person on the subject when he was literally just a sephora emloyee.angelfire117 wrote: βSun Sep 13, 2020 1:03 pmDefinitely prefer James Welch's thoughts where fragrance is not the end all be all to whether a skin care product is good.
