If I had to choose one author, I would definitely go with James Patterson, he's an amazing author. The Maximum Ride series (by JP, of course lol) is a must read, I never wanted to put those books down.

Hands down favorite authors are Stephen King, Chris Bohjalian, and Anne Rivers Siddons. I've read almost all of their books and recommend them.

Some other authors I really like are Gillian Flynn, Joshilyn Jackson, Mark Childress, Sue Miller, Pam Lewis, Robert McCammon, and Dennis Lehane.

A Song of Ice and Fire - George RR Martin. Amazing read the lot in 4-5 months!
Harry Potter - JK Rowling. Clearly, come now.
Inheritance Cycle - Christopher Paolini. Couldn't believe how awful the movie was but the books are amazing! I have read them all at least 7 times each.
Inkheart Trilogy and select other books - Cornelia Funke. Again the movie was terrible but the books pure magic.
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

Agatha Christie. Everytime. Everytime she gets me.

Probably a few others but that's all that immediately came to mind.

I'm only getting started on my reading list so it's pretty short, but here it is anyway!

Authors
Harper Lee
Truman Capote
Ernest Hemingway
Sylvia Plath
Books
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Sun Also Rises
The Bell Jar
Breakfast at Tiffany's
In Cold Blood
The Outsiders
The Secret Garden

There are about a million other books I want to read. My Amazon wish list just makes me want to cry, because I'll either have to rob a bank or win the lottery to be able to afford it all. Sigh.

I adore Khaled Hosseini. He wrote A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner, both of which are amazing, especially the former. They're set in Afghanistan (80s and 90s for the former, 70s for the latter). A Thousand Splendid Suns is about a young girl forced into marriage after her mother's suicide by her estranged father's family. But the main theme is the incredible strength of the bond between Mariam, the protagonist, and Laila, Mariam's husband's second wife. At first, they hate each other, but then a strong love grows between them, and it's honestly amazing. Anyway, I won't spoil it, but it had me in tears, and I rarely cry at books. Would definitely recommend.
I enjoyed 1984 by George Orwell, and Of Mice And Men by John Steinbeck. To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee is also great, not so much the sequel.
I didn't like The Great Gatsby! I don't know why, the story just didn't interest me hugely (I normally love historical fiction but I'm not very interested in 1920s America).

In terms of contemporary authors Carlos Ruiz Zafon is my favorite, and The Shadow Of The Wind is my favorite book of recent years. In terms of classics, it has to be Leo Tolstoy. Nothing beats The Brothers Karamazov.

I just discovered this thread and it's seriously so lovely.
Don't really know who cares :P but one of my all time favorite books is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. A lot of people I know irl have their opinions on it but it personally helped me a lot with things in my personal life.
As for authors, I'd have to say Stephen King and VC Andrews are some of my favorites, as well as Lois Lowry. The Giver changed my whole perspective as a 13 year old lol

I'm thinking about reading George Martin's A Song of Fire and Ice. I've watched a handful of the Game of Thrones episodes, and I can't get into it. I don't know why. Everybody else seems to like it. Maybe the books are better.

It's been a while since I read the series but from what I recall, the books are vastly different than the tv series. The basic plot is the same as you'd imagine but there are a lot of differences. I'd give it a shot if you're into medieval fantasy but it's not for everyone :)

I recommend Game of Thrones, especially if you like a) Tolkienesque High Fantasy b) Medieval and Renaissance British History because it has a lot of similarities to Shakespeare's history plays, especially Richard III, etc.

I am a literature student, but my favorite books are rather wide-ranging.

Classics:
Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment - Fyodor Dostoevsky
Portrait of a Lady - Henry James
Little Dorrit, Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
Middlemarch - George Eliot
Mansfield Park, Persuasion - Jane Austen
Flannery O'Connor's short stories

Others:
Lord of the Rings - Tolkien
His Dark Materials Series - Phillip Pullman
The Space Trilogy - C. S. Lewis
Ender's Game - Orson Scott Card
