the efficacy of oral supplements - are they worth it?

Post by findingdory » Fri Apr 06, 2018 5:31 am

I've always rocked a short pixie cut or chin-length bob for the past 6 years, now I want to grow my hair out to at least shoulder length.
I've seen a lot of people in hair forums recommending oral supplements to give your future hair the best possible ressources, so to speak :D But are those really efficient?
Which oral supplements have you tried to protect or strengthen your hair?

I've only found a study (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3509882/) where they discussed the usage of biotin, zinc or iron supplements for thinning hair or extreme cases like alopecia, but: "A literature search did not reveal any studies describing the use of biotin supplementation for the treatment of hair loss."

On the other hand, my doctor told me that most supplements are not worth the money. So I'm unsure about buying them at all.

Honestly my hair has grown best when I've been staying hydrated and taking normal vitamins, but you can get ones from the drug store that are all roud multi vitamins but with added benefits for hair

Beware if you're acne-prone, Biotin can cause bad cystic breakouts.

I don't think they're worth it, taking care of your hair and body in general will work better than any vitamin.

Make sure your iron levels are healthy! Also a multi vitamin helps
