I agree, but at the same time I don't. It is an open space and you can do whatever you want, but at the same time if a little kid ends up sitting at a table next to you I don't think it's gonna kill you to wait, what, an hour to smoke a cigarette? Like you said though I just think here in the US we're a little more uptight about that kind of stuff, at least where I'm from. A lot of restaurants have smoking and non-smoking sections or just no smoking allowed in general.

Anyway, I think it's a load of bullshit –– Yes, it's "outside" but you're still in a crowd of people, eating, and you choose to pollute the environment for everyone nearby. It's still second-hand smoking when you're outside and sitting right next to a person who smokes, because you are still inevitably exposed to smoke particles. Also, in what world is a restaurant a "grown up" place? LOTS of people take their children to restaurants. I also don't know why you assume these people opted to sit next to a smoker, when like as not, they had no idea that person would suddenly pull out a cigarette and start puffing away. Perhaps it's not even a stranger, perhaps it's the kid's own parent, which just makes it that much worse.
SO YEAH, selfish and stupid - you, or anyone else who decides to smoke right next to other people, especially when said people are eating and especially when said people have children along. Common fucking sense, really.

Well I'm pretty sure the places that get a lot of visits from parents then have a no smoke policy? And if you don't want smoking next to children, you go to a place where you know people don't smoke outside.WiiKristina wrote:In Norway we have a law that gives children the right to a smokefree environmet, but I guess we're not a part of Europe?doggymayday wrote:But we're probably just not as uptight in Europe. I have actually never had anyone at a cafe/restaurant say anything to me, nor have I heard of it. Whereas I was once in SF, smoking on the sidewalk and a woman standing a few meters away was bothered by it (but not by the heavy traffic I suppose).
Anyway, I think smoking is disgusting, and I wouldn't want it near my children..
I think eating meat is disgusting, so you won't see me at a steak house demanding a vegetarian meal.
And I didn't come here to fight, I just said I was bothered by Alli's comment. She seems very open-minded in general, but that was not it.

Re: Alli Speed [formerly of CTFxC / Alli Trippy] Part 2
you know what is common fucking sense? Knowing that not everyone is like you, that not everyone is actually bothered by smoke, just because you are. I have NEVER in my life been at a place where only one person smokes. Never. Because smoking isn't allowed inside, all smokers sit outside or come out to smoke. Parents know this. If they see a restaurant with people smoking out and still decide to sit there that is fine, but don't bitch about it. Just like they have a right to bring kids out, let them run around, scream... I have a right to sit there and enjoy my day, smoking if I want.Peep wrote:doggymayday wrote:Blah

And please, when you're in the city, you're really bothered by cigarette smoke with all those cars outside? How does that make sense?
I don't have a car, so I am insanely disgusted by the stupid selfish people who constantly drive those nasty things and keep them turned on when they wait for someone, which pollutes my environment... (see how stupid this is
If Alli is pissed about cigarettes, that is her right. But I would also like to see her be pissed about car pollution, antibiotics the animals are fed with, animals she then eats, the GMO,the sugar, the additives in food, that are also linked to cancer and other conditions, etc. she should probably also stop drinking alcohol then, because that is bad for your body too. I would love to see her send parents that bring kids to Mcdonalds to hell, where I think they should go for feeding plastic disgusting crap to their kids.
But no, everyone has a say when it comes to cigarettes.
Like I said, I'm done with this debate, I guess Alli is more judgmental and narrow-minded than I thought.

If you think finding smokers and smoking in general disgusting, particularly when forced upon others is judgmental and narrow minded, than, something is inherently wrong with your perspective in life.

Re: Alli Speed [formerly of CTFxC / Alli Trippy] Part 2
You see that's just it - non smokers saying smoking is forced upon them. How exactly is it forced? I understand that some people find smoking disgusting, but I don't think that gives them the right to be insulting bastards. We all coexist outside. I would understand if someone got pissed for smoking inside their home (not that I would ever do that), it's their property, but not outside.
It's like when I eat out, and the people next to me order a smelly bloody steak or chicken. That completely ruins my meal, but will I tell them to go to hell for being monsters or sth?
Alli's tweet was very basic, so we can't know the situation from that.
But like I said, everyone has a say about cigarettes, especially those that don't smoke. I mean, if you're that worried about the health aspect, focusing solely on cigarettes is very hypocritical.

Seeing meat at a restaurant is nowhere near as harmful as secondhand smoke. I say this as both a vegetarian and severe asthmatic who is easily set off by cigarette smoke.

Entitled smokers give smokers a bad name. I don't care if you're in a designated smoking area or not, it's not hard to just be a decent human. I don't smoke, as of about a month ago. I was a smoker for ten years and I was always very cautious of where I lit up. You may not like it, but your smoking directly affects the people in your immediate area. If you don't care, then that really reflects on your personality.
Hell, I vape and I still make sure I don't so it around people unless I know they are okay with it. Just because you have rights doesn't give you permission to be an ass about them.

Well okay if you came to me and said "hey I've got asthma, this is really bothering me" I think I'd put the cigarette away. I'm not an asshole.kickpuncher wrote:Seeing meat at a restaurant is nowhere near as harmful as secondhand smoke. And about the meat, while I hate the smell of it, I was trying to make a point. We can all always find something that bothers us and fight with people about it, if we think we have the right to do it.
The problem I have with this whole thing is how some people think they have the right to dictate how others should live or what they should or shouldn't do, and even top that with saying they'll go to hell, and so on. It especially bothers me when they discuss it from a health perspective, when they harm their bodies daily with other things. And it's especially annoying when the smoking is happening outside in an open space (and when I as a smoker go around with a bike or by foot, and they cannot live without their car).
But, if you smoke or you're fat, you can expect people to comment on it. the two most popular things.

Re: Alli Speed [formerly of CTFxC / Alli Trippy] Part 2
In Quebec Canada we have a law about smoking,
''Smoking is not permitted on any form of public transit, in restaurants and bars, stores, shopping centers, in cinemas, in elevators, in government offices or in banks, and inside office buildings. Many buildings have cigarette disposal arrangements outside.''
Also, those disposal arrangements outside must be at a certain distance from the building.
The only thing restaurants and bars can allow, if they have a permit, if to smoke the chicha. Now know that some restaurants do not listen to those rules.
My opinion on smoking has change a lot during the years. I am not a smoker, nor are my parents and I was against smoking next to me because I have some health issues. But my boyfriend smokes, as well as his father. The first 2 years, I told him to not smoke in front of me. Which he was fine with it. Even his father went along. Then, they both build a like roof outside their house so they can both smoke during winter and summer. So they both started to smoke their and sometimes I would join them to talk. It didn't bothered me because it's outside. I would just stay away.
Now after 5 years, my now fiance smokes in his car but always with the windows open, but he doesn't smoke in my car or at my place. Even at my place he smokes outside but on the street. He choose too do so.
I've learn to live with it but he stills respect the fact that I don't like it. But as a smoker, he is not against the law we have here. He says in fact it's good because then he has a reason not to smoke.
I believe that laws like this should be made everywhere so then no one is aloud to complain.
Now it is just plain stupid to complain about a person who is smoking if you are walking next to them. But at a restaurant, I agree that no one should smoke, kids or no kids.
(okay I was bored, I am done now )

Nothing aggravates me more than when I'm trying to enjoy a meal outside and cigarette smoke starts blowing in my face and I wouldn't want it around my children either.
But hey it's a free country and the law allows smoking outside, so usually I'll just get up and move away from them. Alli is open minded but she does have a right to her own opinion and in this case she doesn't like people smoking around children.

I don't see a problem with her tweet at all. That might be cause smoking inside has been banned forever and for the past few years you're not even allowed to smoke within 9m (30 feet) of any door or air source, so you couldn't even walk past the patio smoking.

I read through the debate and I agree with Alli - I might not put my thoughts into her exact words but if you see that you are next to a child, put out your cigarette or move away. I'm for everyone doing whatever they want, and if that means smoking then more power to you but if I child comes near you while smoking - move away, if the kid is going to be there for a while, and you plan to stay there for a while, put the cigarette out. It's not really all that hard - moving away, or putting it out and lighting again when the kid's gone.copperfox wrote:For reference.

Re: Alli Speed [formerly of CTFxC / Alli Trippy] Part 2
I should probably have mentioned that I used to smoke until 5 years ago. Even as a smoker, it was something I only did in areas designated for smokers or at my own back yard - not even at my own home. I wouldn't even smoke at the bus stop. It's was my choice to smoke, and I never thought anyone should sacrifice their own comfort for my decision or that it should affect anyone's health but mine.
I come from a country with one of the highest rates of smokers in the world. When I quit smoking I realized how obnoxious and selfish smokers really are. It's not up to them to decide how far is far enough to smoke away from people. If it bothers someone enough that they have to make a remark about it, you should take it elsewhere or put the cigarette out. Sacrificing a 5 minute cigarette break won't kill you, but it may harm the people around you. Period.
To compare cigarette smoke which contains numerous toxins and can affect people with asthma (such as myself) and other medical conditions to seeing someone having a steak... again, you're either using the wrong metaphors or you're just really blind. No one is forcing you to eat the steak, but you're forcing them to breathe toxins in the air. Toxins that can lead them into hospital if they have an existing medical condition, or, in several years, for a medical condition developed by second hand smoking.
Sheesh...

OK then I guess there's a special place in hell for all you parents who allow your children to eat sugary fatty foods, sit in front of the TV all day while they turn into zombies watching endless violent shows or playing video games and there's a special place in hell for all of you who drink in your own homes or outside when your children are around because after all your senses are dimmed and your child could be in danger and you'd never realize it..Oh and theres a special place in hell for all of you who allow your children to ride bikes, skateboards etc without helmets, knee pads, elbow pads, and there's a special place in hell for all of you who allow your children to play contact sports like football and soccer where the chances of a serious injury are very high and there's a special place in hell for all of you who allow your children to eat processed fast foods, non organic fruits and veggies loaded with pesticides, meats loaded with antibiotics and steroids, and by all means lets NOT forget the twisted yuppie thinking of "vaccines will kill my child so they aren't getting them" thereby bringing back diseases and viruses log gone because of vaccines....
Oh wait thats right.. None of these count because they don't harm your children and none of YOU would EVER do ANY of the above.. I forgot...And yep, I'm a smoker.. If you go to a public restaurant where it is LAW in the US to have a non smoking and smoking section and you don't want smoke near your kids (meanwhile your choking on all the crap in our air) THEN DON'T SIT IN THE SMOKING SECTION.. and quit your whining. Once you have corrected all of the above then tell me what I can and can not do and where I can and can not do it..Until then I guess we'll all burn together eh?

I dunno about you but I don't have kids and don't plan to have them. It's not the law, anywhere, to have a designated smoking area. It's up to the restaurant owner to decide. Most restaurants in Australia have no smoking areas at all. You want to smoke, you get the eff away from the premises. There are a lot of smokers in Australia, and in Queensland where I live - and I can tell you I've never once had smoke puffed near me anywhere in Brisbane because people don't need laws to tell them how to act in public and with courtesy to one another...
I guess it's different in the US and Europe... I guess we're a little more advanced as a society still.

I'm in the uk, well Scotland to be more accurate. We have some of the cleanest sir, i am a smoker, but even if i am walking down the street. And i see someone walking towards me with either a stroller or very young child. I will do what i can to limit the smoke i expose said child too. Be that moving farther away from them or cupping my hand around the cigarette to funnel the smoke away. Would i have worded it the way alli did, well no. But it wouldn't have taken much for the person to move away from the table and smoke away from the kid, or put it out. For me its one thing to smoke around adults, but i do my best to avoid it around young children. Its not common sense, but should be common decency.. Also sorry for a long post, and any mistakes, its not easy typing on my phone. Just my two cents anyway.
