I rewatched and you're right, there are some white-ish looking people in the video. Still disagree immensely, however. I think this is the problem with white priveleged feminism. OH, someone is nice to you, it's harassment!

If you go on the comments under the video, there are some pointing out that it's mainly only POC and one comment called them 'black trash'.

IKR? There are girls in other countries who want an education but can not because they fear getting attacked just for trying to learn. Gross men greeting her is definitely a problem, but it's a western problem. It's not that big of a deal.savetheempire wrote:I rewatched and you're right, there are some white-ish looking people in the video. Still disagree immensely, however. Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
Some of them are "whiteish" and I'm pretty sure I saw one white guy
People can concentrate on more than one thing to help at a time and things like this in theory should be easy to stop/limit basically by calling it out and saying how unacceptable it is as it is usually ignored.
Things like girls going to school is being worked on but that's more left to charities and the government as that's more out of our control.
No one's disputing that there's bigger problems, but this is also one, it's one of the first steps to getting over victim blaming and rape apology imo

Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
All the guys in the comments being like - oh she didn't tell him to fuck off, how was he supposed to know she's not interested?
I don't know about you guys, but if I'm alone at night or something and some random guy tries to talk to me, even if I want to be rude and he's really pushing it, it's a really massive risk to your safety to just say anything to a stranger. If a guy is bigger than you and you know you wouldn't be able to defend yourself physically, what are you supposed to do, really? Tell him to leave you the fuck alone and potentially have him get really aggressive and angry (which some guys definitely do)?
That's what bugs me about street harassment the most - men genuinely don't realise that they put you in this precarious position that you don't ask for just by being a woman and going outside. It isn't fair. I don't think all guys who try to talk to women are bad guys - but it's super intimidating sometimes. It automatically creates a situation which is dangerous at worst and uncomfortable at best and I refuse to accept the premise that I've somehow invited that just by being a woman and leaving my damn house!

First of all, sorry if anyone was offended at my abruptness last night. I"m usually very straightforward but was maybe enjoying some mixed drinks last night LOL.conflate wrote:All the guys in the comments being like - oh she didn't tell him to fuck off, how was he supposed to know she's not interested?

OK, so one of my things about this video that I had a problem with was naturally as a woman, if someone is following you, you'll go into a store or do something to draw the man away. I also worry what message Hollaback is trying to send because I was under the impression their whole goal was to promote intervening as a bystander. The things that happened in this video are nothing anyone can do anything about. So what do we do about any of this? Just talk about how this stuff IS harassment?
I also have an issue with the fact that I think 80-90% of this video was not harassment. It was just people being nice to the girl. OK, maybe it's because she was pretty, but I don't think saying good morning or hi to someone is harassment. Obviously, the catcalls and following are. I also think the sexist comments about her appearance is harassment. Like the one guy who was like, "Damn, DAMN!"
I cannot seem to make the men in my life realize what it's like to go outside and have to anticipate harassment. Obviously, because none of them have experienced it. After all, except maybe at a bar, when do women actually sexually harass men? Maybe I'm oblivious, but I've never heard of any of my friends harassing men.
Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
Pretty sure this has nothing to do with race. Every one is forgetting the real purpose of this video.

As a white female who's lived her entire life in NYC, I can tell you that the majority of men that catcall or even just say "good morning" are POC (at least in NYC). It's the truth.

Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
The people saying "she's fat and ugly though"....
ONE: Looks don't have jack shit to do with cat calls/street harassment, they just do it anyway.
TWO: Go look in the mirror. Y'all be criticizing just because she's getting attention.
THREE: Your pathetic little argument is invalid.
I really hate people.

Someone recreated the video in Auckland (New Zealand):

Very different.

That video makes me think the U.S.A. is full of imbeciles (which it is, from what I've seen). I thought the first guy that spoke to her was going to follow her. Nope.
That was interesting.

I used to live in New Zealand and in my experience everyone kind of just kept to themselves.VeronicaSawyer wrote:Someone recreated the video in Auckland (New Zealand):

She only got stared at except for one guy who initiated a conversation which I don't think is too bad

Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
Ridiculous video. I can understand being cat called and shit but some of those guys were simply saying Hello, have a blessed day as well as just saying hello and wanting her number. She was walking around for 10 hours in tight clothes what do you expect to happen. I've been walking in broad day light and had guys say "Hey bitch" to me.. The female population IMO is getting way too uptight about things. If you don't want his number then simply walk away or say no. Harassment my ass, if a guy calls you a slut, bitch or any other curse in broad day light or has sexually harassed you in public then that's harassment!

Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
@youtubebeauts The guys saying the more polite things were ok, it's just some guys have an underlying motive (if it sounds sketchy, that's when people get defensive). That's not really harassment since they kept their distance BUT the guy wanting her number AND following her were creepy as hell. O.O She gave them clues that she didn't want to be talked to, they were just either too stupid or ignored it completely. Her clothes were a lil' tight but that's besides the point.
If I sound upset, I'm not.

I should do one of these videos in Toronto. It's not as bad a NY but still pretty bad in some areas.

Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
I honestly think this video is being blown out of proportion. NYC is not representative of America. I don't care what people say. Manhattan is a small island shoved full with all different sorts of people. Things happen there literally do not happen anywhere else.
I lived there for 3 years for college so I'm not just talking out of my ass. I've also lived in the South, Southwest and New England. No where is as bad as new york.

Sorry, but this will happen in any big city. Happened to me all the time in Chicago and San Francisco.savetheempire wrote:I honestly think this video is being blown out of proportion. Yup I second that. San Francisco is almost bad as NYCKleineganz wrote:Sorry, but this will happen in any big city. Re: 10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman
The smaller towns in NZ are very different from the main cities. I've had men following me through town a few times, men who wouldn't leave me alone on public transport a few too many times, and just recently had "white c*nt" yelled at me, though maybe that's a different issue.VeronicaSawyer wrote:Someone recreated the video in Auckland (New Zealand):
