No thread on this? Oh well, I'll go ahead then.
I've been following the updates for the last couple of days, and frankly I'm a bit annoyed at the lack of coverage. Just as we speak, the last body that has been discovered on board the capsized and sunken vessel has tipped the number of discovered bodies into more than the number of rescued people.
If you want good, live updates, I recommend Arirang's live News youtube channel. Updates in text can be found here:

It'll give those of you who find it hard to follow things on major news sites a bit more insight into what's been going on - and what is still happening.
As for me, I can't express in words how I feel. Most of the dead are students, even very young children and some elderly. They stood no chance to abandon the sinking ship; they were told by loudspeakers to "stay still, you'll make it worse if you move around, wait for rescue". When the ship finally tipped, it was too late for most of them to find a way out. Some bodies that were discovered had broken fingers, since the drowning were frantic to escape, emerged in the dark underwater. It sounds like the worst nightmare you could possibly imagine. There's a lot of anger from the parents, due to how badly the rescue operations were handled; truthfully, if everything had been done according to standard procedure, the deathtoll might've been just one or two from the stop/collision itself.
Thoughts? Feelings? Frustrations? Let them out.

Re: Korean Sewol Ferry Disaster
I have frustration as well. I feel frustration at the fact that the ferries did not regularly have safety check and that most of the lifeboats didn't work, that most lifeboats weren't even deployed, and that the children were never even given a chance to save themselves. I'm heartbroken for the families in Korea and it makes me sick. Apparently the ferry was built too high, had too many people on board, and the cars inside that shifted and caused this accident weren't even strapped down. This was all preventable. Korea need to develop a better system to do routine safety checks. I can't even watch the news of the parents waiting to retrieve their children's bodies. I hurt for them.
Re: Korean Sewol Ferry Disaster
I'm with you there.
I'm angry as all hell about how everything's turning out too. It's not even like, they can at least find some sort of comfort in each other, the people searching for the bodies, the coastguard, the parents...it's just accusations, anger, threats and the whole situation is being so poorly handled, it's unbelievable. I mean, I feel the parents. I'd be livid. Some of the very latest news, is this:
It is reported that the coast guard is bluffing their activities (2 recovered->5 recovered, bell never installed -> tried to install)
and this:
Crews abandoned the passengers even though cabin was just 7m away from the escape route. This contrasts with the account of crews.
And on top of that; the prime minister is now announcing that he will resign. Wtf. Is. Going. On. It's complete chaos.
I know it's a very different situation, although if you think about it, not all that much. But I remember in 2011, when in Norway, this guy went berzerk and killed about 60+ young people on an island in Norway with an automatic weapon, and on the same day he placed a bomb in a van in the centre of Oslo and killed a handful more. It was tragic. It was a huge shock. Something like that never happens in Scandinavia. And although, there was some initial criticism directed at the slow response of police, there wasn't this kind of lying, deceiving, throwing each other under a bus, etc. In the end, it brough the country together, and even the prime minister said; "We'll defeat these people who do this. We'll stand together, love each other and not give in to hate." I feel like that was so powerful and important.
This thing in Korea? The exact opposite. The parents must feel utterly let down and with no kind of trust in their government. I feel that, unfortunately, the bad handling of this tragedy is now starting to overshadow the disaster itself.
It's heartbreaking.

Re: Korean Sewol Ferry Disaster
I'm Korean, living in America.
I AM SO FUCKING ANGRY AT HOW NO GOVERNMENT OR CORPORATE ACTIONS WERE SATISFACTORY.
I don't understand how so many people were a part of this treachery - bribing officials so that the ferry safety inspection can be easily passed, going over the limit of the ship so that they can earn more money, government officials fighting over who can send out rescue for money while people were dying inside the ship, the ferry captain and the workers who escaped first and had told the innocent people to hold tight inside the fucking ship, the major news outlets that have been obviously compromised by the government and not giving detailed truths of the incident.
The only thing I'm thankful about is that JTBC, a cable channel, is risking its livelihood in telling the ultimate truth of the incident (the government is after them) and digging deeper and the fishermen nearby who abandoned their work to rescue whomever they could. There have been also people going to the area where the families of the victims are to provide them with comfort, food, and etc. A lot of celebrities have donated money for the incident.
I keep checking korean news outlets about updates and it's so fucking depressing. I cry every time I read about a personal story of the victims. A five year old who survived the drowning had lost all of her family. The high schoolers lost so many of their peers. The vice principal killed himself because of survivor's guilt. The new, young temp workers of the ferry who had tried their best to have the passengers escape first and that died.
It's just sad. I'm almost losing hope in my home country. So much corruption beneath the shiny exterior.

Omg my heart goes out to those family and I'm also pissed at the people who told passengers to stay put who fucking does that. You're suppose to try to save the passengers not leave them to die a painful horrific death. >:(

Re: Korean Sewol Ferry Disaster
This incident is horrifying, absolutely horrifying and every time I read some new information I get sick to my stomach all over again. Like OP said, it's insane how there isn't more mainstream news about this tragedy. Where I live in America, no one even seems to know such a thing happened. I have to scour the internet for updates.
I just hope that some form of justice can be served and that all those poor souls may rest in peace.
