Mel in Melbourne
Re: Mel in Melbourne
She's one of the few "luxury handbag community" youtubers I actually like. Mainly because of the effort/detail she puts in her reviews and comparisons. You can really tell she enjoys handbags and not just acquiring them for videos and views.
I haven't watched any of her other "style" videos but I remember absolutely loving the clothes she got from her trip to Korea. I think she dresses pretty well.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
I like that she looks put together but I find her style tacky sometimes. Just seems like another bored ajumma with too much money and time.
Re: Mel in Melbourne
I appreciate she spends her own money on items she talks about.
She genuinely collects things, which is neat. Rather, than buying and selling and buying and selling; Mel seems to hang on to some items (chanel earrings she's collected for years, gucci shoes, again she's been collecting for years)
It's annoying to see these ladies on Youtube, who think they are "collectors" but they turn over and sell things within a month or two.
I don't get her "style". She spends thousands on bags and shoes than cheaps out on cheap clothing. A bit tacky...
What I can't handle is the accent, the constant smile and the way she OVER ANNUNCIATES EVERY FRIGGING WORD.
I don't know whether that's just an Australian accent, or whether its a quirk. Either way, its annoying and I wish she'd give that up.
Also, is it me, or does she come across as a know-it-all?
I appreciate that she has a good set of knowledge around the luxury goods she buys; but... She just seems really elitist and over bearing in some parts of video's, in other's she keeps trying to be "cutesy" which doesn't work with an Aussie accent. It just comes across as fake.
It could be the shrill tone she uses with her voice and the over-annunciation of words, but... there is just something that screams "over-bearing twat" to me when I watch some of her haul video's.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
Her videos are pretty okay. I watched her vids to get some tips on Hermes HQ appointment and Chanel products. I don't agree her but she has her opinions. I found that overall she is doing pretty okay running her own channel.
But there are conflicting facts in her lifestyle:
* she's always in her husband's vehicle which is old and has basic interior. She lives in Australia and has two children. Doesn't she have a drivers' license?
* They flew economy class for Paris trip. (close wing view)
I don't know, probably it's just her and her husband's lifestyle choice to save to buy another Kelly bag.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
I like her videos because she does SERIOUS hauls. Estimated amount she spent during her Paris trip was $20-25K USD. She is obviously out of touch, but somehow also seems as grounded as one can get when hauling that much. I wonder what she and her husband do for work, has she ever mentioned it?

Re: Mel in Melbourne
I like watching her videos every now and then, but my god, she puts way too many ads in her videos and I find it so distracting. I don't watch her that often because of that. The only other person who I think does this to the same extent is Super Dacob. I can't watch him for that same reason.
I know the ads are how they make money but to put 5 ads in a 15-20 minute video is overkill. 3 tops, please.
I do agree that her taste is gaudy/tacky (both in clothes and accessories) but she goes in depth with her reviews so sometimes I'll suck up her tacky clothing and ads just to have her go over something I'm interested in.

Use adblock. Still doesn't solve the issue of the really loud intro's though. I like her channel as unlike many other "luxury youtubers" she doesn't buy bags with the intent to resell them in a few months.adel220 wrote:don't watch her that often because of that. Re: Mel in Melbourne
No hate, but I watch a few "luxury youtubers" who too literally post hauls from their shopping trips that run into the thousands, if not tens of thousands and they say they are stay at home mum's. I'm not sure how someone could live with themselves spending so much of their partner's money like this, unless it was transparently a sugar daddy/mummy and their baby set up. There would be such a huge power imbalance. Each to their own though, I still watch their videos and enjoy them.qetui wrote:I believe she works in real estate.incognitomode wrote:I like her videos because she does SERIOUS hauls. Mel, and Sophie Shohet stand out because they fund their own excessive splurges and don't just post videos about "hiding" their spending from their man , or him buying her hundreds of pairs of designer heels because he has some sort of kink. They buy things because they like them personally, and have taken the time to save up for them (from what it seems anyway), which probably makes those odd gifts they receive from their spouse even more appreciated.
Mel's travel vlogs are also worth watching. There was the one from S.Korea where she showed all of the food, and the sweet making at the historic site. (Sorry for the basic description). I guess it's always nice to see people when they are traveling actually try something like food that they can't get back home and is related to that area.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
I’m from Melbourne and the same part of Malaysia she’s from and have family friends that knows her and they are upper middle class at best. Her husband is a physiotherapist and she is a real estate agent so they earn a modest amount enough for her to buy luxury accessories but obviously not clothes. You gotta pick what you love if you can only have one you know
Re: Mel in Melbourne
I'm not surprised. I am starting to see that a good majority of these luxury YouTubers are actually middle or upper middle class. Not that there is anything wrong with that--I am middle class at best--but the constant hauls and blatant showing off is starting to wear on me.Imherebutnot wrote:I’m from Melbourne and the same part of Malaysia she’s from and have family friends that knows her and they are upper middle class at best. Could explain for all her awful multiple ad placement in her videos. gotta get all those pennies for the next big luxury haul!
I often wonder if she has any money put aside, you know for rainy days or her kids. I don't know how it is in Australia but in the US having a retirement "nest egg" is important albeit vastly ignored.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
As the previous commentators mentioned, there is a lot of strong evidence to suggest that Mel is just upper middle class. For the past 2 years that she has had her YT channel, her subscribers have constantly asked for a "closet tour" video. She would just respond by stating that it was on her list of to-dos.
I strongly believe at this point, she just doesn't want to show her subscribers at best that she doesn't have a basic reach-in-closet however over $50,000 in Birkins and Kellys alone. Proving the point that she is truly not rich, but someone who is merely obsessed with labels. I will say, even as raggedy as Shea Whitney's closet was, she still showed it off.
It is not about privacy, but not wanting to spend $2-$3k on a basic closet upgrade on the low -end. However, will spend $6,000 on a YSL jacket (in her newest haul). Sad really.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
I don't see the problem with not having a closet that looks like all the other youtuber's. It is mainly a youtube trend. And a single wardrobe put in a Melbourne's room corner, can cost much more than a whole room filled with Ikea shelves in a countryside home (pretended to be a glamorous location).
So maybe Mel just doesn't care, and I would totally agree with her.
But maybe she doesn't want to show that she doesn't actually own all the bags and slg's that she unboxed?

Re: Mel in Melbourne
Mel has a serious shopping addiction. I don't know how she keeps up with all those handbags. She has bought heaps of Hermes rodeos, not to mention all the Hermes bags. Some of her hauls have some ridiculous looking items. The bucket bag from Hermes comes to mind. I don't even enjoy watching it anymore when she has a massive haul every week so how can she appreciate it herself.
Re: Mel in Melbourne
Yeah, some of her hauls look ridiculous both for quantity and aesthetics....totally agree she has a shopping addiction. However I really appreciate how informative she is , and most of the times, I think she shows a great sense of style. She also seems to be a very nice person to me (while most of the other youtubers absolutely don't).

Re: Mel in Melbourne
I do like Mel but I feel that in the last few months she is been having these ridiculous hauls one after another.
It feels as if she is trying to keep up with the trends that is happening on ig.
She is always buying shoes I wonder what her shoe collection look like. I doubt she can wear all these shoes that she buy.

Re: Mel in Melbourne
When her life is empty, shopping makes her feel fulfilled. In anyways, the Louis Vuitton demin shoe looks hideous.
Re: Mel in Melbourne
I can't believe her rodeo obsession is genuine. She keeps on buying so many and always gets so excited saying how rare they are. I really hope she buys those hanging puppets only to resell them at higher prices and make a profit.
Re: Mel in Melbourne
That Hawaii Hermes SA surely found a sucker! The haul is ridiculous. It's obscene. I was surprised that she called the Native American scarf "American Indian"...
