MakeupGeekTV: the nicest guru
Re: the nicest guru
Yeah, she's nice but she is also one of the most business minded. It comes off as all just to make money.

Re: the nicest guru
I agree with lola888 She's a business woman. She's very good at selling products. It's her living to sell products through youtube. Everything she mentions is just promoting her products and way for you to got check out her blogs. Even if you don't buy anything from her makeup store she still earns money from you visiting her sites.
Re: the nicest guru
I like Marlena, truly. I think she and EmilyNoel83 are my favorites of all the gurus. She did kind of lose me when she started talking more about fashion for heavier girls. I would never exclude someone by posting a video for thin girls, so I don't understand how it's acceptable for Marlena to post videos for curvy or heavier girls.

Re: the nicest guru
She really can't post videos for skinny or curvy girls. She's so disproportional, her body is all over the place. Big boobs small waist and enormous hips. I doubt she even lost the weight on her own without surgery. If you look at her videos you see her heavier videos and then all of a sudden skinny videos. You can't see her shedding pounds. She's as fake as a her boob job.

But a lot of gurus are smaller and their OOTD/OOTN are exactly the same as fashion for "slimmer girls" i guess. it is just OOTW videos with a different title.EllaBlue wrote:I like Marlena, truly. Re: MakeupGeekTV: the nicest guru
I was subbed to her for a long time, and then it all became about her business. I don't feel like watching yet another guru pushing her own products so much, so I unsubbed. She was one of the first to get suckered in by Sigma. Other than that, she's a nice person. I recently clicked on a video and every product she used was from Makeupgeek so I didn't watch it.
Re: the nicest guru
Why do you feel the need to post this in the rave section?SCR0623 wrote:She really can't post videos for skinny or curvy girls. She's so disproportional, her body is all over the place. I'm all for that you can post whatever you want whereever, but this site clearly has a rave and a trash section. People don't like when others go to the trash secion and rave about a guru, the same goes for here. There is an appropiate place for it

Re: MakeupGeekTV: the nicest guru
I've always related to her (weight issues, similar coloring, my face is similar to hers but hers is more classically beautiful) and I find she communicates very well. Yes from a business perspective, I work in beauty retail and they try to coach us on those types of things, communicating clearly and concisely as a way to sell product. I don't blame her for pimping her stuff out, if it's quality.
I just really love candles, and Nars Orgasm blush, and all things MAC, and Bath and Body Works Sales, and Michael Kors, and my boyfriendandmypuppy!!!!
really.

Re: the nicest guru
My problem with this is that it does not work both ways. A thin guru posting an OOTD and Marlena posting videos that target a specific body type are NOT the same. There's no way a slim girl could ever post a "Fashion for Skinny People" video and get away with it. Try to imagine the rants that would attract!speicladork1122 wrote:But a lot of gurus are smaller and their OOTD/OOTN are exactly the same as fashion for "slimmer girls" i guess. it is just OOTW videos with a different title.EllaBlue wrote:I like Marlena, truly. Also, it just doesn't make sense to me, brand-wise. For someone as business-minded as Marlena appears to be, you'd think she would realize that by specificially targeting heavy girls, she's alienating a large part of her audience. As someone who has always been teeny-tiny, seeing multiple videos and blogs "For the Curvy Girl" really sends me the message that I'm wasting my time watching/reading that post, that I need to go elsewhere.

Re: the nicest guru
I think the reason that she and other heavier gurus do that, is because they feel ignored by most fashion videos/blogs/magazines. It's more about filling a hole that's there and helping heavier girls feel better about themselves.EllaBlue wrote:My problem with this is that it does not work both ways. If skinny girls need fashion inspiration there are an nfinite amount of resources for them.

Something really is wrong with you. I said this to you in the "trash section" constructive criticism is fine but what you're saying is just disrespectful and then you get angry when you're called a hater. Now you're here in the rave section continuing your vitriol, you're a disgusting human being.SCR0623 wrote:She really can't post videos for skinny or curvy girls. Re: the nicest guru
Carameldrop, it is possible to have a small waist, big boobs and big hips. It's called an hourglass shape, it's not very common but it does happen in nature. I look about the same as she does after her weight loss, a little slimmer. It's not impossible.CaramelDrop wrote:Something really is wrong with you. Re: the nicest guru
I know that but SCR0623 doesn't seem to get that and is constantly attacking the way her body looks. This is maybe the 4th comment this person has made about her bodybeautysuperwoman wrote:Carameldrop, it is possible to have a small waist, big boobs and big hips. Re: the nicest guru
I think the point of labeling it "(insert item here) for the plus size/ curvy girl is to garner more views. Not to mention a lot of OotD's I've seen featuring a slimmer model tends to generate lots of comments asking for a similar piece(s) for a plus size gal.EllaBlue wrote:

Re: MakeupGeekTV: the nicest guru
She's my favorite guru. She's intelligent, coherent and helpful. And, unlike other gurus, she has integrity and hasn't become all about hauls and vlogs. In fact, I don't think most gurus deserve the title. They should be deemed hoarders instead since that's what they are. Or, if we want to be kind, "collectors".
In regards to what some of you said:
I think it's unfair to hold the fact that she's a business woman against her. I've been lurking in the trash section for the past few days and noticed that one of the biggest beefs people here have with gurus is that they don't think YouTube is a legitimate job and that they'll be screwed when the well is dry. Here, then, you're criticizing Marlena because she's smart enough to do more with YouTube - she's using the money she earns from it and the audience she's garnered to begin her own brand so that when her star does fall, she'll still have a means of making money. And though I think it'd be highly suspect if other gurus were promoting their own brands, I don't feel the same towards Marlena. Like I said, she has integrity. I think she really does try to create the best products so that they're actually worth promoting. Plus, she says she wants feedback from everyone so that if something isn't right, she can improve it. Though, to be honest, I've been wondering if she reviews other products more harshly now to indirectly promote her own. I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt at the moment since I like her.
Lastly, I don't think it's wrong for her to post videos on how to dress as a curvy girl. Like beautysuperwoman said, "curvy" girls are largely ignored in the fashion industry. Also, it's harder to dress your body if you're larger because it matters more if something is or isn't flattering. And, honestly, even though I'm nowhere near curvy/large, I still think her tips can be helpful since I'm not a twig either.
Sorry for the novel.

Re: MakeupGeekTV: the nicest guru
@lesserpanda don't worry about writing a novel. you bring up good points. I agree 100% with what you're saying. I think she realizes she has to hold herself to a higher standard or she loses long time viewers. She's very intelligent, that much is clear.

She has admitted to her surgeries though, and made several videos about them.SCR0623 wrote:She really can't post videos for skinny or curvy girls. I don't see the problem with a video about fashion for curvy girls. It's just to help girls that have a similar body type as Marlena.EllaBlue wrote:My problem with this is that it does not work both ways. I wouldn't see a problem with someone posting a fashion video for "skinny" girls. But it would be smarter to use a more appealing term like "petite" or "slender" because the word "skinny" might be offensive to both heavier and smaller girls. Just as calling a video "fashion for fat girls" would be offensive as well.
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell.
Re: MakeupGeekTV: the nicest guru
I think its real petty for someone to get on here and attack someones body image. Like really? are you that insecure about your own image that you have to attack someone elses? I started watching Marlena's videos a little after she had her post op. I feel that out of everyone I watched she was real and raw. As for her clothing hauls for the curvy girl why is it such a big deal? I have many other gurus that I watch and a lot of them are a lot smaller than I. Im a plus size girl and being one I can say that the curvy girl does get the cold shoulder a lot of times by the public. I know that I go out and cant find something thats appealing to my body or makes me feel beautiful. Marlena has been in that spot and knows how it feels to be "forgotten" by society. She can relate to a lot of her viewers. If you got to her makeupgeek website you would see people who are trying to lose weight or in the process of thinking to be motivated. Now im NOT saying that the thinner girls should be left out in the cold because they shouldnt. They should be made to feel pretty too. But when you see gurus like Bunny (AKA Grav3yardgirl) or macbarbie they do hauls that fit their body types that are skinny. They cant do a haul for a plus sized girl because it doesnt relate to their bodies (I watch both of these gurus and like them very much!). I believe Marlena truely cares for each and everyone of her MUG'S be it thin, plus, or inbetween she cares for em all and wants them all to love themselves.
