What Do You All Think About Story Time/Personal Videos?

Post by Inspiteof »

I have really mix feelings about them.

I don't mind people being honest and open about their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. I actually prefer it because I'm like that. I'll tell you my stories and I don't care who you are. I don't care about the actual 'airing of laundry'. I think that's a lot of people's issue with such videos. This society has taught us that our problems are our own. We are to blame for them, we deserve them, and we are the only ones that can fix them. So, when someone starts talking about their issues that is distasteful. But, I don't give a fuck about that.

My issue is that I always question if the person is telling the truth, or are they just making shit up to get attention, and in YouTube's case, get money. But, of course as sooon as I think that, that is quickly accompanyed with feeling like a douchebag, because this person is talking about losing their husband or whatever while they're trying to hold back tears, and I'm like, "Is this for real?". That's so mean. Don't get me wrong. I've told people pretty heavy shit before, and their reactions were dehumanaizing. They just didn't give a shit, and probably thought I was lying. So, I've been rejected like that. And it's not the end of the world. But, still... it sucks. Another issue I have is whenever these videos do pull on my heart strings... I feel like a douchebag again, because of being suspicious in the first place. I start thinking, "Great, I'm worse than one of those commenters that talks about how brave someone on Youtube is, lol". Especially, when I start commenting myself about my story in relation to their story. Then I really feel like a jackass.

I don't know. These videos, man.... piss me off.

I think alot of the times they're exaggerated or flat out lies. The titles alone are click bait. But I tolerate those more than the reaction video youtubers

I think the youtube algorithm is now pushing Tana Mongeau drama style nonsense including reaction "theory" videos to it. Look at pewdiepie, Markiplier and Sssniperwolf - what a coincidence that despite how they're supposed to be gaming channels they're filling up their videos with emotional drama or storytime videos now. Raya gave up gaming completely. TheGamerFromMars did an actual gaming-related video a while back and it was his lowest viewed video in a very long time. It's kind of sad how much control youtube has over what people end up viewing.

I don't understand why so many people, particularly the bigger Youtubers are complaining about the algorithm. And what are theory videos? I never heard of that.

I make sure to clean out of my history of any kind of videos that are not the typical kind of videos I watch. Because every time there is just ONE video of something else, I get like 100 recommended videos that are kind of related for like weeks and weeks.

I tend to stumble upon Story Time videos because once in awhile there is one on my recommended feed. Right now there is the one about someone husband dying. It's funny because all my other recommendated videos are for beauty videos because that's essentially what my history is, with this one "Story Time: My Husband Died" video. Lol! It's weird. It's also weird because apparently a lot of people have exciting, terrible lives. Here I thought lives like that only occur to a few, but according to Youtube everyone has these crazy ass stories. Don't get me wrong, I know everyone has a story to tell. But, sometimes I'm like, "Is this exaggerated or downright a lie?"

I kinda look at Story Time videos the same way that I look at anecdotes in stand-up comedy. I believe that they're usually rooted in reality at some level, then altered in some way to make them worthy to bring on stage. I think ST videos are exactly the same... except they're not entertaining to me, because rather than being made funnier they're just more dramatic.

It really matters on the context of the video. For example, a lot of Tana's videos are obviously either lies or extremely exagerated.

One of the youtubers i watch named Moe Othman, uploaded a video the other day of how he was sexually harrased by a tv producer at a private youtube party during Vidcon. The video was serious, and he gave a positive message in the end to teach boys and girls to never tolerate or accept experiences like this. Moe's video felt authentic.

But most youtubers just lie about their story time videos, "the time my uber driver kidnapped me and sold me to a meixcan drug cartel"... i mean really? At least make it reasonable, that that unbelievable..

I feel like a few years back there were a lot of videos about sexual assaults. I don't know if I was just indirectly searching for them, or they all came out around the same time. But, it was kind of crazy how many Youtubers were sexually assulted, especually when the Youtuber was sexually assulted by a fellow Youtube/other personality. It was like, "What?"

Marina Joyce sexual assault video was particularly shocking. It made me sick to my stomach.

I assume they're afraid of having to alter their channels to try to keep the same audience. It's like they've specialised in certain things and they don't want to have to start over with new people competing. By "theory" I just meant speculation or analysis videos of for example Tana Mongeau, from totally ordinary people getting millions of views. They almost remind me a bit of the reply girls. Keemstar is one youtuber I doubt is complaining about the changing algorithm.

I'm thinking it's a little like food - if junk food is in the house or around you then you're far more likely to give in and eat it. In a moment of weakness all these clickbaits get clicked. It's kind of scary how they're tapping into our instincts for their own ends. I think a time will come when nothing is real in youtube land anymore because real people won't be able to compete anymore with these manipulated views and also it won't be possible to tell anymore what's real and what's fake. What's fun is that there is some humanity left there so we can still point out their mistakes but that mightn't always be the way.

I have mixed feelings regarding these types of videos as well. After the whole fake storyteller Tana Mongeau incident happened, I've been a lot more observant. It's annoying when you're scrolling and you find these sexual storytime titles, my uber driver tried to kill me or just things we genuinely are tired of seeing all the time. I've also noticed that there's Youtubers who copy from one another or after recent events. Trinity Jae released a video called ' STORYTIME: I glued a SPIDER to my eye!' after a viral picture of a woman who glued a fly to her lid was released. They're really doing the most and it sucks Youtubers who are actually genuine have to pay the price for it.
